Mission Statement

As the heart of a community of children, families and educators that embraces its diversity and is committed to academic excellence, the Charter Oak Academy of Global Studies will ensure that all students acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to reach their highest potential and become responsible, respectful, caring members of a  global society.  As a magnet school we will accomplish this by establishing high expectations, integrating gifted and talented strategies for all students, immersing students in other cultures and promoting home, school and community partnerships.

Principal's Message

Greetings from Charter Oak Academy of Global Studies! School opened to the sound of a steel-drum band and an international parade as our students and their families created a living rainbow with streamers and balloons to celebrate the opening of school. As the American flag and those of the countries being studied were raised, we were reminded of the meaning of our magnet school and saluted our second year.

Charter Oak Academy is a strong, caring and diverse school community devoted to the development of each student. Charter Oak has a long history in West Hartford. The school opened as a public school in 1884 with an addition to the building in 1970. It boasts classical architecture and unique blend of old and new. The building seems to invite people in to discover the uniqueness that exists within its walls. Warm welcomes and smiles greet all who enter - children, parents, grandparents and visitors.

A rigorous academic program with rich learning experiences is offered to all students. The basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics are a primary focus and are integrated into all curricular areas. A Global Studies Curriculum is unique to this magnet school, students study about our country and then travel the globe comparing and contrasting cultures around the world. Technology plays a critical role, enhancing the curriculum and connecting students with others through the internet. Gifted and talented strategies are incorporated into the curriculum, challenging all students to think critically and creatively. A School wide Enrichment Team, comprised of primary parents, plans and organizes activities that extend the regular curriculum.

The Family Resource Center works closely with the school staff to sponsor family activities and facilitate home/school communication from birth to school age and beyond. Charter Oak was recognized by Working Mother magazine, September 1999, as one of the ten best schools in the country for families. Charter Oak's programs extend beyond the classroom and the school day with programs such as Homework Center and the Explorations Program: After School Adventures in Learning. The Parent Teacher Association also sponsors a wide variety of family functions that bring school and family together in meaningful ways.

We welcome you to view our web site and take a moment to explore our numerous offerings. We also provide interested families with guided tours of the school and an opportunity to meet with me. Please call if you would like to visit this Global Studies magnet school.
