The Adventures of Flat Stanley in Emerson, New Jersey The day Flat Stanley arrived at our house, he was a little tired from his long journey in the mail, and he needed some time to warm up to our house, and our family, who he had never met before. We sat him in our living room and let him look at our Christmas tree, and get used to his new surroundings. The next morning, we went to a pancake breakfast with Santa Claus. Flat Stanley had breakfast with Johnny, Chris and Katie, (Cara's cousins). He ate 6 pancakes with maple syrup, and a small bagel with cream cheese. We were a little worried that Flat Stanley might not stay flat after all that food, but he was ok. He sat on Santa's lap and asked for a list of presents, and Santa gave him a candy cane. Later that day, we went to Chris' basketball game. Flat Stanley wanted to play so badly, but we explained to him that only third grade boys could play on that team. Stanley understood, but during half time, he ran out onto the court and showed the team some great moves. Thanks to Stanley's teaching, the team won the game. That night, Flat Stanley stayed home with Johnny, Chris and Katie and the baby-sitter. They watched movies and at popcorn. (Boy, can Stanley eat! It's amazing he's so flat!) Sunday morning, Flat Stanley came to church with us. He didn't like having to stay quiet, but he tried his best to behave. Sunday afternoon we took Flat Stanley to the movies to see The Grinch. I think Flat Stanley may have been a little frightened by Mr. Grinch. Every time the Grinch was onscreen, Stanley covered his eyes and plugged his ears. (Well, can you blame him7 The Grinch is very loud and a bit ugly to look at!) But Stanley enjoyed himself. He particularly liked the buttered popcorn! Monday Stanley went to first grade with Katie. He sat nicely on her desk and watched her work, and at recess, he was tried to jump rope with Katie and her friends! That didn't go very well. Poor Stanley fell down and got a boo-boo on his knee. But a Band-aid made him feel much better. All of Katie's friends had fun with Stanley. They thought he was so cute and funny. After school, he went to CCD (religion class). I think the full day of learning really tired him out because when he got home, he fell asleep, and didn't wake up until morning! Needless to say, Stanley woke up Tuesday morning very hungry! At his request, we had cinnamon rolls for breakfast. That day Flat Stanley went to third grade with Christopher. Chris kept Stanley in his pocket, and when Chris didn't know an answer, Stanley would call it out, and the teacher thought it was Chris! Finally the teacher caught on, and made Stanley raise his hand if he wanted to answer. He had a fun day! Stanley made lots of friends in third grade, especially with the girls. One girl, in particular, asked if she could be Stanley's girlfriend. Her name is Sally. She's flat too.
Wednesday Flat Stanley went to fifth grade with Johnny. This was a special day for Stanley because it was the day of the Holiday concert at school and Johnny was playing in the band. When it was time for the concert, Flat Stanley sat on the music stand in the trumpet section with Johnny. He turned the pages of the music for Johnny and the other trumpet players. That was very helpful. But Stanley kept telling jokes during the concert, and making everyone laugh. The band teacher didn't think it was very funny, but everyone else did. Thursday Flat Stanley didn't feel like going to school, so he spent the day at home with Cara's Aunt Diane. They made chocolate chip cookies together. Flat Stanley really liked making cookies, especially tasting the cookie dough. He got chocolate all over his face. By the time Johnny, Chris and Katie got home from school, Flat Stanley had a big stomach ache, and had to lie down for a while. When he got up, he played Playstation with Johnny and Chris. He got the highest score on the Spyro the Dragon game. Friday, there was only a half day of school, and all the classes had holiday parties. Flat Stanley couldn't decide which party he wanted to go to. He finally decided to go to the third grade class party because they were going to eat the chocolate chip cookies that he helped make. Flat Stanley also wanted to go to the third grade to see Flat Sally again. Flat Stanley explained to Flat Sally that he was going back home to Connecticut on Saturday. Flat Sally was very sad, and she decided she needed a little vacation. She asked her mother if she could go home to Cara's house for a few days with Flat Stanley. Her mom said it was ok. That is why Flat Sally is here, now, while you are reading this. Flat Stanley had a great week in Emerson, NJ with Cara's cousins. We hope he comes to visit again. |
