Earlier this week, we received a phone call
from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. They
informed us that Wolcott School has been selected as one of five National
Distinguished Schools of the Arts. We are one of two elementary schools to
receive the honor.
In her letter to the school, Kathy Levin,
Director of the Kennedy Center Arts Alliance said that Wolcott School was being
recognized for its educational model "based on celebrating children's
voices through the arts." The Editorial Board, Magical Mailbox, and
Town Meeting were specifically cited in the commendation along with Wolcott
Songs, Moving Arts, and our wonderful Art, Vocal and Instrumental Music
programs.
The school has been invited to perform at the
Kennedy Center in March 2002. We will also be recognized during a special
session at the annual conference of the National Association of Elementary
School Principals in San Antonio, Texas in April.
During our next Town Meeting on Friday,
October 12th, we will show an twelve-minute video, which was submitted to the
Kennedy Center as part of our nomination package. The video was produced
by Andy Mayo, Lynn Katz, and Rob Hugh in our new digital video studio, which was
also mentioned in the commendation.
