What’s going on in Fourth Grade?
Interviews
with Two Fourth Grade Students
By Cynthia O. and Sarah S.
Leomary
is in Mrs. Zandes’ room. She
tells us that they are learning about geometry.
She loves math because she loves to work with numbers.
She doesn’t like spelling as much because she doesn’t like memorizing
the letters. She says it’s
confusing. She also dislikes
homework and other extra work. As
for Leomary’s first year at Wolcott, she says, “It’s great so far.”
Carmelo
is in Mrs. Israelson’s room. In
Mrs. Israelson’s class they are learning about fractions.
Carmelo loves math. He says
it’s easy and that’s why he likes it so much.
He also does not like spelling and trying to get all those letters in the
right order. Carmelo loves
homework. He also loves his
teacher, Dr. Karafelis, and everyone else at Wolcott.

This
month Wolcott People Magazine asked the students at Wolcott what their favorite
things to do in the winter are.
The
top five results were:
1. Ice Skating
2. Snowboarding
3. Skiing
4. Sledding and tubing
5. Riding Snowmobiles
Stay
with us for next month’s survey!
Mrs.
Mancuso has worked at Wolcott School for two and a half years.
We wanted to know what the most common reasons that students came to
see her were. She told us that
most students come in for medication, sore throats, or stomach aches.
The time of day that most students come to see her is during recess due
to injuries on the playground.
During
the summer Mrs. Mancuso enjoys spending time with her two children.
She loves to read and her favorite food in the whole world in
chocolate.
Mrs.
Mancuso loves being a school nurse because children learn better when they are
healthy and school nurses make that happen.
Interviews
with the Discipline Based Teachers
By Jenna A. and Emily G.
We
interviewed the Discipline Based Class teachers to find out how long they have
been teaching, where they have taught and their hobbies.
The
first person we spoke to was Miss Richard. This is Miss Richard’s second
year teaching physical education at Wolcott.
She told us that Wolcott is the first school she taught at.
The
next person we interviewed was Mrs. McGinnis.
She has been teaching art classes for 30 years!
We wanted to know where she was for those 30 years and she said that
she’s taught at six other schools which are: Duffy, Braeburn, Bugbee,
Elmwood, and Hall High school. She
also told us that she has three hobbies: art, reading and skiing.
We
then went to talk with Mr. Hugh.
He
has been teaching music at Wolcott for 10 years.
Before coming to Wolcott he taught at Norfeldt.
His hobbies are singing, of course, and traveling.
He also enjoys jogging.
Finally
we interviewed Mrs. Paquette. She
has been a librarian for 23 years. She
also taught in other schools before coming to Wolcott.
She worked in Farmington and in Pennsylvania. Her hobbies are playing
tennis, reading and cooking.
We
interviewed the Reading Department teachers to find out more about them.
First
we spoke with Mrs. Beyer. We
asked her how many years she has taught reading.
She answered 10 years.
We
then interviewed Miss Zita. This
is Miss Zita’s second year teaching reading at Wolcott.
Next
we spoke with Miss Lazeren. This
is Miss Lazeren’s first year teaching Reading at Wolcott.
She has always enjoyed working with children and watching them grow,
and that’s why she decided to become a teacher.
The
last person we interviewed was Miss Battisto.
This is also Miss Battisto’s first year teaching Reading at Wolcott.
We
had a great time interviewing these teachers!
This month’s featured writer is Lawton A.
You may know Lawton from all the work he has done on the GOTCHA committee, but there are a lot more things about Lawton that we bet you didn’t know.
Lawton was born on January 7, 1991. He is a fourth grade student in Mrs. Kasper’s class. History is Lawton’s favorite subject in school. He chose this subject because he likes reading about the presidents and doing reports on them.
When he is not in school, Lawton enjoys playing football, running track, and swimming.
Lawton started playing football two years ago. The position he plays is fullback. He likes football because it is a contact sport and keeps up his running, which is very important since he got to the states last year for running track.
Lawton’s favorite season is winter because he likes to ski and snowboard.
He is the oldest child in the family and he has two siblings. Grant is in kindergarten and Alexa is in third grade.
His
favorite food is salad that his mom makes. When he grows up he wants to be an
actor or a newscaster.
When
the bell rang, a student fell down. Mrs.
Kasper and Mrs. Marchisio came over, took the
child’s hand and backpack and walked him to his room.
They don’t know it, but Lawton was watching, and caught them being
kind.
Stephanie N. was caught picking up papers that had been flying around the room and onto the floor. Stephanie did this without being asked! Thanks Sarah S. for catching Stephanie in the act of doing a good deed.
Student:
Would you be mad at me for something I didn’t do?
Teacher: No.
Student:
Good, I didn’t do my homework!
Q.
What
kind of present do you give to a rabbit?
A.
14 carrot gold pin
Q.
What
kind of truck can you step on?
A.
A toe truck
Last
month we asked if there were any clubs not offered at Wolcott that you would
like to join, we only had two responses.
Sarah
J. said she would like there to be a candy club at Wolcott.
She must have a sweet tooth!
Alexa
A. would like to see a president’s club that included all of President Allison
L.’s friends. What a way to
support your friend!
This
month’s question is:
If you could have another way to celebrate or display your writing at Wolcott, how would you do it?
Let
us know what you think, complete the following statement, cut it out, and put it
in the mailbox outside of Miss Zita’s room.
I would like my writing to be displayed or celebrated by
