Welcome

Welcome to the Whiting Lane Health Room.  This page is designed to give you information about who we are and what we do.  The Whiting Lane school nurses are Nancy Driska and Susan Petty-Bailer.  Ms. Driska and Mrs. Petty-Bailer share the position of one full-time nurse.  They have developed a system of documentation and communication that provides effective and efficient continuity of care.  The Early Learning Center nurse is Ms. Lisa Nowak.  She works with the pre-school program children and is also the town-wide supervisor of nursing services.

v Pharming- the use of RX and OTC drugs for recreational use - is not a new concept. However, with high profile celebrity deaths like Heath Ledger in the news it is an opportunity to highlight this increasing trend. Using a medication for nonmedical reasons is on a dramatic rise in the U.S. across all age groups A downloadable brochure is available from The Partnership for a Drug-Free America (www.drugfree.org) entitled "Getting High On Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs Is Dangerous: A Guide to Keeping Your Teenager Safe in a Changing World".

v Reminder - National Poison Prevention Week (March 16-22) is fast approaching. Do you need materials for a bulletin board display? Ideas for classroom activities? The poison center can be a resource for educational materials like telephone stickers and brochures, lesson plans, activities, and videos (on loan) for school nurses. Contact Amy Hanoian-Fontana, M.A., EMT-B, Community Education Specialist at 860-679-4422 or hanoian@uchc.edu for your education needs.
