The Writing Curriculum focuses primarily on writing
fictional narratives (i.e. imaginative stories) in Kindergarten through Grade 3,
and expository selections in Grades 4 and 5. In all cases, the writing
process (prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing) is central to the
curriculum. Students learn to evaluate and improve upon their ability to
remain on topic (focus), organize their thoughts, and support their views
through elaboration.
In each of the above areas, learning objectives become more sophisticated
with progression through the grade levels. Mastery of the learning
objectives leads to successfully achieving these goals set forth in the West Hartford K-5 Writing / Reading Curriculum: "Therefore, the first goal of the West Hartford Reading and Writing Programs is to help each student become a self-directed, strategic reader and writer who determines a purpose for reading or writing a particular text, decides how to approach the task, monitors understanding, and regulates reading and writing behavior in order to guarantee understanding. The second goal, no less important that the first, is to help each student become a life-long reader and writer." |
