Queen Isabella By Julia Hi! I’m Queen Isabella. I was born on April 22, 1451. Well, I don’t know about any other queens but I am famous for a lot of things. Number one, I am so kind that I raised money for the Granada war that my hometown, Castile was in. Instead of riding my horse my favorite free time activity I was raising the money. After Christopher Columbus begged me two times I agreed to give him the supplies he needed to go around the world. I banished everybody from Castile if they weren’t my religion which is if you don’t know catholic. I’m not too strict, I decided to give them the choice to stay and become my religion, or leave! I had a very good life until I was 3 ½ years old. My father became ill and died. My older brother, Henry, promised to our dad that he would take care of me, my little brother Alfonso, and our mother. But he banished us from his castle when he became king. I hate him. Then priests and tutors taught me and my friend Beatriz reading, grammar, poetry and history. I studied the Catholic religion with Beatriz and we learned horse back riding at age six and got our own horse at age ten. I was so happy. I traveled all around Spain. My kingdom captured the Muslim Stronghold of Granada in 1492. Castile fought a war against the Muslims in southern Spain. I became queen in 1474 and reigned until 1504. It was one of the greatest things that ever happened to me in my whole life. I was twenty-three when I became queen. There was a Holy Brotherhood which was a type of permanent military force. I declared myself to be queen instead of my brother, the king’s choice, because I was the heir to the throne! Sorry I yelled there but I don’t like to think about it. But the only reason I was heir to the throne was my little brother died. It was so long ago I forgot why he died. Castile and Aragon fought a war against Portugal because the second heir to the throne got married to the king of Portugal and she was mad that I didn’t let her be queen of Castile. The Portugal war lasted five years and ended with peace. I don’t know how that happened. The second time Christopher Columbus asked me and the king for supplies we said yes. We gave him three ships and 100 men as a crew. On August 3, 1492 Christopher Columbus set sail around the world after we gave him the supplies. It wasn’t a waste of money because he was right about the world being round. Who knew? I and my husband, Ferdinand, rode to Medina. My son died in 1497. My d-daughter died when she was giving birth. My daughter’s son died before he was two. A lot of people died as you know. I and King Ferdinand got sick at Medina del Campo. King Ferdinand recovered quickly from the sickness. I became worse from the sickness and died in November of 1504.The only reason I’m here today is that they let me have one day to be alive again. |
