PABLO PICASSO

By Elisa

Hi. My name is Pablo Picasso and you might think my artwork is a little weird with a nose in one place and an eye in another but hopefully, once you get to know me that will change.

I was born in Malaga Spain on October 25, 1881.When I was fifteen I was already an amazing painter. In fact I was so good my father asked me to finish paintings for him. But then I realized I wanted to do more. I wanted to paint emotion instead of painting everything perfect. I did the Blue Period, the Rose Period and sculptures in the 1900’s. The Blue Period is when I painted the poor and used lots of blue. For example The Guitarist was one of my Blue Period paintings. I did The Blue Period from 1901 to 1904.  The Rose Period was when I painted lighter colors and painted happier things. Here is one of my paintings from the Rose Period. See how much happier it is than the Blue Period? Anyway, I did the Rose Period from 1904 to 1906.  I was raised in Barcelona Spain and the south of France. My dad was an artist and wanted me to be one too.

I went to school at the Academy of Fine Arts. My father was a professor there. Throughout my whole life I looked up to Paul Cézanne.

One of my famous pieces of art is Guernica.  This painting had darker colors and I painted it for the bombing of Spain in 1937. Guernica had a picture of a mom holding a dead child, a fallen soldier, and a gored horse. Another one of my famous pieces is Les Demoiselles d’ Avingnon. This painting had Cubism and Art Historians say it opened the door to modern art. You might be wondering what Cubism is. Well, it is several painted squares put together to make a picture. I started making sculptures in 1906. I was inspired by masks and costumes, but I was really inspired by bull fights. I painted tons of them. Wow! The bull fights were so exciting!

I didn’t participate in World War 1, but after World War 1 I started painting classical art which had big figures. Sadly in 1913 my beloved father died. I was so unhappy. To top that, I married Olaya Kokloua and had a son. Having a son wasn’t bad at all, but marring Olaya was a BIG mistake so immediately we left each other. I got married three times in my life and had three children. I had a full life and died on April 8, 1973 when I was ninety-one.
