Neil Armstrong By David Greetings from the moon! I am Neil Armstrong. I was born in Auglaize County, Ohio on August 5, 1930. I was famous for being the first man on the moon. Don’t listen to those other guys! I was the first man to step foot on the moon. I am also famous for being the first American astronaut who was also a military test pilot. When I was growing up I helped on my family’s farm. I received a degree from Purdue University in 1955. In 1962, I was accepted in the astronaut program, which is called NASA. I’ve loved airplanes my whole life and was very excited to see my dream come true. I was chosen as commander of Apollo 11 mission years before the rocket lifted off. That is why I was over the age limit when I flew to the moon. On July 16, 1969, the morning that we launched into space, we ate the traditional astronaut breakfast of bacon and eggs. After breakfast we suited up in our space suits for our flight to the moon. Boy was I nervous and excited. The portable air conditioner, which looks a suitcase, kept us cool in our heavy suits. It’s getting so warm in here; I wish I had brought it with me. Can you believe the black and white cap under the helmet is called a snoopy cap? Yeah, I thought that was kind of funny, too. Before the Saturn V rocket lifted off about 3 million people watched from a few miles away. Just so you’re not confused, the name of our mission was Apollo 11, but the rocket that shot us into space was called the Saturn V. By the way it was the largest rocket of its time. We sped toward the moon at 3,000 miles an hour. I couldn’t believe that after all my training and waiting that I was in command of Apollo 11. We orbited around the moon thirteen times before separating the lunar module from the command module. On July 20, 1969, Buzz Aldrin and I spent 22 hours on the moon collecting pieces of the moon’s surface. While I was tired from being up for 22 hours, it was surprisingly the most exciting day of my life. |
