Marco Polo

By Karo

It is great to be back to life!  Oh hi! I didn't see you there.  My name is Marco Polo and I was born in 1254 in Venice, Italy. I'm famous for being one of first people to travel to Asia in the mid-1200's. I traveled 12 thousand miles and trust me it was exhausting. Oh, remember when I told you that I was born in Venice, well actually I was born in Korkula  At the time the island was ruled by Venice.

When I was six my dad and my uncle traveled to China.  Unfortunately, I didn't go. When I was young my mom had died. Finally in 1271 I traveled to Asia. In 1275 my crew and I arrived in Shando and I became a favorite of the emperor Kublai Khan. I stayed there for 17 years and I returned to Venice 1295. Not meaning to brag but I was first to travel across the width of Asia.  I also commanded a Venetian war galley in a naval battle with Genoa. By the way I forgot to give you the definition of galley. A galley is a war boat.

Sadly I was taken to jail by the Genoese while waiting to be ransomed by my family.  I told stories about my hazardous travels to other prisoners. One of the prisoners who I told my story to wrote a book about me. At last I was released in 1299 and this book became one of the best in literature. Christopher Columbus later on wrote a Latin version of the book.  This book was translated into many different languages. I'm sorry to say to all my fans that I died in 1324.
