Asking your child Good Questions about Reading

BEFORE:

  1. What do you predict this book is about?
  2. What do the pictures tell you about the characters or the plot?

 

DURING:

  1.  Imagine you are the main character.  How would you feel if that situation happened to you?  How would you react?  (C.T.)
  2. If that character were alive today, what would you ask him or her?  Use details from the book and your own experience to support your answer.  (C.T.)
  3. Why do you think the author included this paragraph?  What are they trying to show?  (D.I.)
  4. What caused the character to react this way?  (D.I.)
  5. What type of person is this character?  Use evidence from the story to support your answer. (D.I)
  6. What questions would you ask the author that were not already answered on this page?  (D.I)
  7. What will the mail character do next? (G.U.)

 

AFTER:

1.         Were your predictions about this book correct?

2.         How does the character change in the story?  (G.U.)

3.         What is the lesson the author wants you to learn from reading this?  (G.U.)

4.         If you could rename this book (or chapter) what would you name it and why? (G.U.)

5.         How are two characters alike or different? (G.U)

6.         What is the problem in the story?  Give specific details or information from the story to support your answer (G.U.)

7.         What important facts have you learned from reading this article?  Explain why those facts are important.  (G.U.)
