CANSTRUCTION!

CANstruction 2010 was held
Saturday, May 15 at the Connecticut Science
Center. Fifteen teams participated this year,
four of which were from West Hartford. King
Philip's team built a treasure chest, in our
attempt to, "Unearth the solution to hunger."
Working with the King Philip team
was advisor Carey Poetzsch, and architect
Patrick McKenna, from
Architecture for Humanity, of New
Haven, Connecticut.
The event raised over 42,000
cans of food for local food banks. This was more
than double last year's total.

Congratulations to
Wonderful Writers!
Students on the Topaz Team participated in
the
Letters about Literature contest in the
fall. Students were asked to write a letter to
an author explaining how that author's work
somehow changed their way of viewing the world
in a positive way. Ellen O'Brien placed third in
the state for this competition, and Elinor
Cohen, Michael Li, and Sophia Pascon were
selected as honorable mention finalists. With
over 1100 entries statewide, this is an
incredible feat! Congratulations, students!

Morning Advisory reflects on our diversity by
recognizing
Autism Awareness month!
Morning advisories spent the month of April
focusing on autism awareness. As a culminating
project, each morning advisory was given several
pieces of construction paper to create their own
puzzle. Mrs. Ukanowicz-Parrett's advisory
created a Mickey Mouse puzzle along with 2 haiku
poems and an acrostic poem about what they
learned about autism this month.

~ Help for Haiti ~
Congratulations KP! We raised over $1400!!
Once again,
KP's charitable spirit exceeds expecations!
Thanks to your generosity, we raised over $1400
through spare change donations to help those
suffering in Haiti. In honor of KP parent

~ Peace Day ~ September 21,
2009 ~
|
|

The King Philip Middle School
staff and students participated in an International Peace Day activity
called Pinwheels for Peace. Members of the school community dialogued in
their Morning Advisor groups about the many facets linked to creating world
peace. Writings and images were created on over 900 paper pinwheels over a
four day period in response to those conversations. The completed pinwheels
will be planted as a "Peace Garden" throughout the school campus to
reinforce the importance for peace in our own lives and world community on
September 21st. Overall, the goal was to reinforce to the King Philip
learning community that anyone can think globally while acting locally.
